Choosing a Storage Facility or Unit

Tips and Tools:

Once you’ve answered the questions in the Storage Basic Overview section, you’re ready to choose your facility. Using the answers to your questions, start calling storage units. Find out about specials, insurance rates, and costs for the type (or types) of storage you’ve determined that you need.

If you need 24/7 access, make sure your facility offers it. Not all of them do—and it’s not fun to show up at your unit at midnight just to discover you can’t enter it until 7:00 in the morning.

It’s also important that you specifically ask about climate-controlled rates, as they will differ from non-controlled units. Ask how often the units are cleaned, learn about contract terms, and make sure you’re aware of late payment fees. How easy is it to pay the facility? Do they have direct deposit? Billing by text or SMS?

Look online for reviews. This will help you determine the reputation and the longevity of the facility. Is it well established? Does the owner own multiple facilities? You want to leave your belongings with a facility that has developed a reputation for being trustworthy.

Once you’ve narrowed your search down, go visit the facility. How safe do you feel? How clean is it? Is the personnel friendly and helpful? Does the facility have the supplies and extra conveniences that make your life easier? You’ll learn a lot about your facility just by visiting it.

If you plan ahead of time and ask good questions, you won’t have any surprises waiting for you when you show up at the facility with your belongings—or when you go to back to pick them up.
